The story in stone

Around the temple grounds, carved stones tell the life of the Buddha, carry the twelve vows of Quan Âm and hold verses of his teaching. Here each one is given word for word, in Vietnamese and English, beside its photograph.

How to read this page

Every word on this page is copied from the stones exactly as it is carved, with the same spelling, capital letters, punctuation and line breaks, in Vietnamese and in English. Where the carver split a word, joined two words or spelled something unusually, it is left that way. Nothing has been corrected, and nothing has been filled in.

Where a photograph does not show the carving clearly, the text is marked:

  • [?] after a word: part of that word, usually a small tone mark or a punctuation mark, cannot be read with certainty in the photograph. The word is given as closely as it can be seen.
  • [unreadable]: letters that cannot be made out, or that were carved over one another.
  • [obscured]: letters hidden by a chip or a stain.
  • [cut off]: carving that runs past the edge of the photograph.

The small capital lines at the foot of each stone are its dedication. On the two-column verse stones, the left column is given first and the right column follows the line.

The life of the Buddha

Twelve carved panels follow his life from Queen Mahamaya’s dream to his entry into Nirvana. Each tells its scene in English and in Vietnamese beside the relief.

QUEEN MAHAMAYA'S DREAM

During the early period of the 6th century, B.C, in
the small kingdom of Kapilavathu, Nepal, there
was a clan called Sakya ruled by the wise and
benevolent King Sud-dhodana with his virtuous
and compas sionate Queen MahaMaya. One night,
Queen Maya had a dream that a white ele phant
with six tusks came down from heaven and entered
her right side. All of the prominent Brahmin scholars,
invited by the King to interpret the dream, proph
esied that the Queen would give birth to an
exceptionally talented and honorable prince.

THE BIRTH OF PRINCE SIDDHARTHA

On the full moon of the Vesak month in 624 B.C., in
accordance with the custom at that time, Queen Maya
returned to her home land in Koly to await the birth
of her child. On the way home, captivated by the beauty
of the flowering sala trees, she stopped by Lumbini
garden to enjoy the spring flowers.Under the shade
of a sala tree, with flowers of bright colors and
wonderful fragrance, the Queen gave birth to a Prince.
Everyone in the kingdom rejoiced in the news of His
birth.

THE KIND-HEARTED PRINCE

One day, sitting in the garden, Prince Siddhar-
tha saw a flock of swans flying by. An arrow
sud denly pierced through the air and claimed
one swan. The swan fell down right at his feet,
throbbing in pain. The Prince took in the wounded
bird and caringly nursed it. To save the bird
from his cousin Devadatta, the hunter' in front
of the royal court, Prince Siddhartha fought for
the right to keep the bird. With his great debating
skills and compassion, he won everyone's heart.
After the swan was back in good health, the
Prince freed the bird and ad vised it to be
mindful of hunters.

FACING REALITIES

Receiving permission from the King, the Prince went
outside the royal palaces for the first time to face the
real world. He was led through the palaces four gates.
He wit nessed firsthand the horror of reality: an old
man with curved back, struggled to move his feet
while walking; a sick person was moaning in pain;
a dead person with his motionless body; and finally,
there emerged a Brahman walking leisurely. All of
these sights left incredible, agonizing im pressions
on the Prince. He then realized that all the lavishness
that He had been en dowed with, is impermanent,
transient.

THE RENUNCIATION

Witnessing the true suffering of life, the Prince decided
to abandon the royal priv-ileges and the life of pleasures
for the path of liberating suffering. Determined to
embrace the life of an ascetic so as to find the Truth
to save all beings, late one night when everyone was
safe asleep, the Prince left the royal palace, his father,
his beautiful wife and his beloved child, in search for
a Spiritual Teacher. He was then 29 years old.

THE ASCETIC LIFE

He roamed around for six years in the quest to find
the Truth from spiritual teachers.During those six
years, he subjected his royal body to various forms
of ascetic practices in the midst of harsh weather,
the frightful plight of deprivation , in the deep forests
and remote mountains. The sincerity and in tensity
of his practice were so astounding that he became
the "Master of all the ascetic Masters". At the end,
He realized that these extreme practices did not lead
to emancipa- tion, but weakened his mental and
spiritual capacities.

THE RELENTLESS CHALLENGES

Deciding to abandon the rigorous ascetic prac-tices,
the Prince accepted a bowl of milk-rice from a peasan
girl, and then sat and meditated beneath a pipal tree
where he made a final re-solve: "Let only skin, sinew
and bone remain, let the flesh and blood dry in my
body, but I will not give up this seat without attaining
complete awakening " Seeing his fierce willpower
and total concentration to realize the Truth, Mara, the
evil one, was infuriated and fearful. He found every
possible means, from terrorism and threats to caressing
affections, so as to destabilize and sabotage Siddharta's
will to realize en-lightenment. But all of Mara's efforts
failed, Sid-dharta remained unperturbed; and the light
of wisdom gradually began to radiate.

ATTAINING ENLIGHTEMENT

After 49 days of deep meditation under the pipal tree,
He finally understood the root of all delusions and
human suffering, and realized the path to salvation,
Nirvana, the state of true happiness and equanimity.
In the light of this awareness, He realized that all living
beings have the Bodhi seed, but be cause of ignorance,
they could not transcend the vicious cycle of life and
death. The pipal tree is currently known as the Bodhi
tree, and the teachings that He fostered later on is
called the Dharma, the true and all-embrac ing path
of compassion and wisdom

thoát khổ đau, đưa đến thực chứng Niết-bàn, an lạc,
hạnh phúc đích thưc [?]. Trong ánh sáng giác ngộ, Ngài
nhận ra tất cả chúng sanh đều có sẵn hạt giống Bồ-đề;

THE TURNING OF THE DHARMA WHEEL AND THE FORMATION OF THE SANGHA

After enlightenment, He thought of the five ascetics
he had practiced with. He found them at Deer Park in
Sarnath, on the outskirts of the City of Benares. There,
he gave his first sermon explaining the use-less and
harmful two extreme lifestyles: self-indul-gence and
self-mortification. He expounded the Four Noble Truths,
the basic foundation of his teachings: the truth of
suffering, the truth of the causes of suffering, the truth
of the end of suffering, and the truth of the path that
frees us from suffer -ing. The five ascetics became
Buddha's very first dis -ciples, and the beginning of
the Sangha or commu -nity of monks was formed.
That completed the Triple Jewels: the Buddha, the
Dharma, and the Sangha.

THE FORMATION OF THE BUDDHIST NUNS ORDER

Young Prince Siddhartha had been cared for and
nurtured by his mother's sister, Pajapati Gotami.
Shortly after the Buddha paid a visit to his father and
royal family, Pajapati Gotami, together with a group
of women, went to Vesali, and pleaded with the Buddha
to allow them to be ordained as Bud dhist nuns. Seeing
their earnest wishes to learn the Dharma, and after
numerous supplications from his attendant, Ananda,
the Buddha allowed Pajapati and her female entourage
to be ordained. Complete set of precepts and proper
conduct were then established for the nuns. According
to history, this is the first formation of the nuns order.

BESTOWING INDISCRIMINATE LOVE TO ALL:

During his years of proliferating the dharma, the
Buddha had extended his compassion to a multitude
of people: from king and nobles, such as Bimbisara,
Anurudha, Anathapindika...to the untouchables, such
as Púrna, Nanda, Sunita ... from the Sages Mahà
Kassapa, Sariputta to the courtesan Am-bapàli, or
the horrific murderer Angulimala...The Buddha's
wisdom and compassion is for all, it does not
differentiate nor discriminate. Like the water of the
rivers merging into the sea, it pos -sesses but the
one same salty taste; all human beings, regardless
of the difference in their status, are all the same
once they embrace the dharma. All the so-called
differences will clearly dissipate, to open up the
path of Precepts-Con -centration-Wisdom.

hề có mảy may phân biệt, kỳ thị. Và như nước trăm
sông khi đã đổ về biển cả thì chỉ còn một vị là vị mặn;

THE BUDDHA ENTERED NIRVANA

After 45 years of continuous teaching and travelling
to many places to expound his Dharma to countless
people, regardless of their status in the world, the
Buddha finally reached Kusinara, where He rested
under a grove of sala trees. Laying down on his right
side, his legs straightened out, his left leg on his right
leg, his head directed to the North, He went into deep
meditation, then he en-tered Nirvana. That was in
544 BC. His last words were "All phenomena are
impermanent and subject to decay! Work out your
salvation with diligence!"

* The idler who does not exert himself when he should,
who though young and strong is full of sloth, with a
mind full of vain thoughts-such an indolent man does
not find the path to wisdom.

* Let a man be watchful of speech, well controlled in
mind, and not commit evil in bodily action. Let him
purify these three courses of action, and win the path
made known by the Great Sage.

Thận trọng lời nói; kềm chế ý nghĩ; thân không làm ác;

* Entangled by the bonds of hate, he who seeks his own
happiness by inflicting pain on others, is never delivered
from hatred.

* The cankers only increase for those who are arrogant
and heedless, who leave undone what should be done
and do what should not be done.

* The cankers cease for those mindful and clearly com-
prehending ones who always earnestly practice mindful-
ness of the body, who do not resort to what should not be
done, [?] and steadfastly pursue what should be done.

* Difficult is life for the modest one who always seeks purity,
is detached and unassuming, clean in life, and discerning.

* One who destroys life, utters lies, takes what is not given,
goes to another man's wife, and is addicted to intoxicating drinks
- such a man digs up his own root even in this world.

* There is no fire like lust; there is no grip like hatred; there is
no net like delusion; there is no river like craving.

* One is not wise because one speaks much. He who is peaceable,
friendly and fearless is called wise.

*A monk is not an elder because his head is gray. He is but ripe
in age, and he is called one grown old in vain.

* One in whom there is truthfulness, virtue, inoffensive- ness,
restraint and self-mastery, who is free from defile- ments and
is wise - he is truly called an Elder.

* Not by mere eloquence nor by beauty of form does a man
become accomplished, if he is jealous, selfish and deceitful.

* Of all the paths the Eightfold Path is the best; of all the truths
the Four Noble Truths are the best; of all things passionlessness
is the best: of men the Seeing One (the Buddha) is the best.

* You yourselves must strive; the Buddhas only point the way
Those meditative ones who tread the path are released from
the bonds of Mara.

* "All conditioned things are impermanent" - when one sees this
with wisdom, one turns away from suffering. This is the path to
purification.

* From lust springs grief, from lust springs fear. For one who is
wholly free from craving there is no grief; whence then fear?

Từ dục lạc sinh lo sợ, từ dục lạc sinh sợ hãi; xa lìa hết dục lạc,
chẳng còn lo sợ gì.

* People hold dear him who embodies virtue and insight, who
is principled, has realized the truth, and who himself does what
he ought to be doing.

* When, after a long absence, a man safely returns from afar,
his relatives, friends and well-wishers welcome him home on
arrival. As kinsmen welcome a dear one on arrival, even so his
own good deeds will welcome the doer of good who has gone
from this world to the next.

* Overcome the angry by non-anger; overcome the wicked by
goodness; overcome the miser by generosity; overcome the liar
by truth.

Lấy tình thương thắng sân hận; lấy cái tốt thắng điều xấu; lấy

let him be controlled in deed. Abandoning bodily misconduct,
let him practice good conduct in deed.

Giữ thân đừng nóng giận, điều phuc [?] thân được an hòa, xa lìa
thân làm điều ác, dùng thân để tu hanh [?] lành.

* Let a man guard himself against irritability in speech; let him
be controlled in speech. Abandoning verbal miscon- duct, let
him practice good conduct in speech.

Giữ lời nói đừng nóng giận, điều phục lời nói được nhu hòa, xa
lìa lời nói thô ác, dùng lời nói để tu hạnh lành.

* Let a man guard himself against irritability in thought; let him
be controlled in mind. Abandoning mental miscon- duct, let him
practice good conduct in thought.

Giữ ý đừng nóng giận, điều phục ý tính [?] thuần, xa lìa ý độc ác,
dùng ý để tu hành lành.

* He who checks rising anger as a charioteer checks a rolling
chariot, him I call a true charioteer. Others only
hold the reins.

* Make an island unto yourself! Strive hard and become wiso!
Rid of impurities and cleansed of stain, you shall not come again
to birth and decay.

* Easy is life for the shameless one who is impudent as a c[unreadable]w,
is backbiting and forward, arrogant and corrupt.

* Driven only by fear, do men go for refuge to many places - to
hills, woods, groves, trees and shrines. Such, indeed, is no safe
refuge; such is not the refuge supreme. Not by resorting to such
a refuge is one released from all suffering. He who has gone for
refuge to the Buddha, the Teaching and his Order, penetrates
with transcen- dental wisdom the Four Noble Truths - suffering,
the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the Noble
Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of suffer- ing. This indeed
is the safe refuge, this the refuge supreme. Having gone to such
a refuge, one is released from all suffering.

nguyên. Trái lại, quy y Phật, Pháp, Tăng, phát trí huệ chơn chánh;

* Happy indeed we live, friendly amidst the hostile. Amidst
hostile men we dwell free from hatred.

* Happy indeed we live, free from avarice amidst the avaricious.
Amidst the avaricious men we dwell free from avarice.

* Victory begets enmity; the defeated dwell in pain. Happily the
peaceful live, discarding both victory and defeat.

bại sẽ sống đời an vui.

* There is no fire like lust and no crime like hatred. There is no
ill like the aggregates (of existence) and no bliss higher than
the peace (of Nibbana).

* Health is the most precious gain and contentment the greatest
wealth. A trustworthy person is the best kinsman, Nibbana the
highest bliss.

* Indeed, he who moves in the company of fools grieves for
longing. Association with fools is ever painful, like partnership
with an enemy. But association with the wise is happy, like
meeting one's own kinsmen.

* From affection springs grief, from affection springs fear. For
one who is wholly free from affection there is no grief, whence
then fear?

* Through many a birth in samsara have I wandered in vain,
seeking the builder of this house (of life). Repeated birth is
indeed suffering! O house-builder, you are seen! You will not
build this house again. For your rafters are broken and your
ridgepole shattered. My mind has reached the Unconditioned;
I have attained the destruc- tion of craving.

* One should do what one teaches others to do; if one would
train others, one should be well controlled oneself. Difficult,
indeed, is self-control.

* One truly is the protector of oneself; who else could the
protector be? With oneself fully controlled, one gains a mastery
that is hard to gain.

* By oneself is evil done; by oneself is one defiled. By oneself
is evil left undone; by oneself is one made pure. Purity and
impurity depend on oneself; no one can purify another.

* He, who by good deeds covers the evil he has done, illu-
minates this world like the moon freed from clouds.

*Swans fly on the path of the sun; men pass through the air by
psychic powers; the wise are led away from the world after van
quishing Mara and his host.

* Hard is it to be born a man; hard is the life of mortals. Hard
is it to gain the opportunity of hearing the Sublime Truth, and
hard to encounter is the arising of the Buddhas.

* To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one's mind
- this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

* Blessed is the birth of the Buddhas; blessed is the enunciation
of the sacred Teaching; blessed is the harmony in the Order,
and blessed is the spiritual pursuit of the united truth-seeker.

Hạnh phúc thay! Đức Phật ra đời; hạnh phúc thay! Chánh Pháp

* Neither in the sky nor in mid-ocean, nor by entering into
mountain clefts, nowhere in the world is there a place where

* One who, while himself seeking happiness, oppresses with
violence other beings who also desire happiness, will not attain
happiness hereafter.

Người nào cầu yên vui cho mình mà lại lấy đao gậy não hại kẻ

with violence other beings who also desire happi- ness, will
find happiness hereafter.

* Only rarely is there a man in this world who, restrained by
modesty, avoids reproach, as a thoroughbred horse avoids the
whip.

* When this world is ever ablaze, why this laughter, why this
jubilation? Shrouded in darkness, will you not see the light?

* Behold this body – a painted image, a mass of heaped up
sores, infirm, full of hankering – of which nothing is lasting or
stable!

* Fully worn out is this body, a nest of disease, and fragilo.
This foul mass breaks up, for death is the end of life.

* Even gorgeous royal chariots wear out, and indeed this body
too wears out. But the Dhamma of the Good does not age; thus
the Good make it known to the good.

* Those who in youth have not led the holy life, or have failed to
acquire wealth, languish like old cranes in the pond without fish.

* One should first [unreadable] oneself in what is proper; then only
should one instru[unreadable] the wise man will not be
reproached.

fall of things.

*Hasten to do good; restrain your mind from evil. He who is
slow in doing good, his mind delights in evil.

*Should a person commit evil, let him not do it again and again.
Let him not find pleasure therein, for painful is the accumulation
of evil.

Nếu đã lỡ làm ác, đừng tiếp tục làm ác, đừng vui khi làm việc
ác. Nếu chất chứa việc ác nhất định thọ quả báo khổ đau.

*Think not lightly of good, saying, "It will not come to me." Drop
by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the wise man, gathering
it little by little, fills himself with good.

him find pleasure therein, for blissful is the accumu- lation of
good.

* Not the sweet smell of flowers, not even the fragrance of
sandal, tagara, or jasmine blows against the wind. But the
fragrance of the virtuous blows against the wind. Truly the
virtuous man pervades all directions with the fragrance of
his virtue.
